Depends on the fish. Some low 70's some upper 70's to low 80's. Most have a range of temperatures.
More important, it has to be consistent. The fluctuations will cause the problems. Don't put a fish tank near a window. Drafts in the winter and heat from the summer. Best to be in a shaded interior space for less fluctuation of temperature.

like everything connected with fish-keeping it depends on the species of Fish! A general range is between 70-80 deg. F.
You should always find out the requirements and adult size of fish before buying so I'd recommend you either buy a good aquarium book or visit some of the super sites that are now available!
