If you are flying from the USA, YES. If you are driving, NO. Next year this will all change. It would be a good idea to apply for a passport now. It's taking any where from 8-10 weeks to get one because of the backlog and requirement to have one when traveling to the caribbean.

Good Luck

Legally , YES you do
Airlines will ask you for a passport ..
if you cross the border driving , you can go in Mexico with you driver's licence only.. even If passpost is requiered, Mexican agents dont really make from thi a big issue.

My advise: Get your passport by mail and travel safe..

i visit attempt to respond to all of your questions. i study about Cancun because I stay the following. a million.- sure, if you're a US citizen you'll want a passport to visit Cancun. 2.- Cancun is marvelous. White sandy beaches are espectacular truly. also there´s alot of activities to do the following. you are able to visit the Mayan Ruins (My favorites are Chichen Itza it truly is about 3 hours from Cancun by technique of bus which by technique of how is unexpensive, and the different is Tulum it truly is about 2 hours away). yet another issue you may favor to attempt is vacationing Xcaret it truly is a themed park that has underwater rivers, aquarium (with Dolphins and likely, you are able to swim with them for about 70 US) and a stay Mayan coach, observed by technique of yet another coach of everyday Mexican music from all states. Xcaret is positioned on the sea coast so that you are able to also take a swim in organic swimming pools. yet another position i could propose, especially in case you´re vacationing as a pair is Tulum. Tulum is a city positioned south of Cancun (about 2 hours). It has lower than my humble opinion, the most suitable beaches. i tips Tulum because it has very romantic villas by technique of the sea. in case you´re the party type, you ought to also attempt Cancun inn zone discos like the well-known Coco Bongo, confusing Rock cafe, Mr. Frogs, Daddy O and the city, which claims to be the biggest disco contained in the global. in case you want to hit upon the maya global, I also propose Xbalamque inn, a Mayan themed - economic equipment priced inn in Downtown Cancun. wish this answer helps.
