Are the ways you do this superficial?
As a Canadian, I was brought up to respect people from other countries as a way to honour my own. Flag waying was never really big in my family but treating the national anthem with respect and those of others was.
I wonder tho, if honouring our country meant being better people, how much better of a world we'd have.
(I'm not saying that I'm doing a great job on that front. Perhaps the most patriotic of people are those who give of themselves to make the world a better place rather than those who are friendly or flag wave.)

The person who made me think about this was an American, Bill Maher. I'd never heard of him before but I gather he's pretty well known (and somewhat contraversial) comedian.
Still he really has a point.
He talks alot about sacrifice for ones country like the way people used to join in war effort or join army etc. Interesting thoughts.
