By making it a safe place for humans and the richest and most bountiful farmland in the world.
BTW- There is much greater forestation today than there was in 1900. Why? because modern farming is so much more efficient, much less land is used. The unused land has returned to forest.
Also, The water and air in the US are much less polluted than they were 100 years ago. thanks to our understanding of the need to protect the environment. The real danger to the environment today comes from China, India, and Russia primarily. Why? Totalitarian regimes care about power, the people in those countries, cannot vote to change the leadership and protect their natural enviromnent, This is a huge problem in China where rapid industrialization is polluting many former farming areas, the 70% of chinese people who are farmers are upset, but their government ignores them.

consider that the USA was 90 percent forrested land in 1750 and by 1900 is it less than 20% forrest. That is a huge reduction in the oxygen generating capacity of mother nature for us oxygen breathing creatures.
Consider that in 1750 most gases being emited were methane from the animal process and in 1900 most are hydrocarbon and this does not break down to a usable state.
consider that in 1750 you could drink freely from any lake river or pond without fear of disease andnow you must purify even your tap water before you can consume.
This is but a few, just think.
