but they don't appear to work on vista and I don't want to buy one only 2 get this confirmed! There is no s-video port on the camcorder although I do have one on the PC.

Dazzle make USB video capture cards with editing software included. I have version 9 and it has work very well transfering old 8mm video to DVD.

you won't be able to connect an analogue camcorder direct to a pc. It only gained't artwork because the computer can in reality deal with a digital signal. you do not have any decision yet to get between the convertor bins, alongside with a top Dazzle Fusion. i'm sorry, yet there is not more good value way. the answer which advise you write them to DVD isn't efficient - you nonetheless favor to transform the signal to digital.

You need to have video capture hardware on your computer.
Your S-video may be video out.
Both your links are for video capture packages.
Microsoft has been pretty good for providing backward compatability at least up until windows XP.
