It's not just close, it *is* pure energy. What we call 'mass' is merely localized concentrations of huge amounts of energy.

Good question

You know about the difference between latent and actual energy right?

So an object is energy in latent form- a pizza I eat will later be burnt as energy- this goes for any object- rocks whatever

Actual energy is fairly obvious- movement etc

So most if not all are either one or the other- certainly in our earth and atmosphere so it would be true to say that in those confines- our earth and atmoshere- the whole system is pure energy.

Now lets talk about the universe- does it have a limit? If yes then it is not pure energy. But I believe it does not have a limit and therefore could be pure energy

The moon is latent energy, the stars, the sun etc etc. Light is a combination of actual and latent energy- photons are latent in that they have mass but they are actually moving. Light is travelling through the universe there is no question.

I think the key question is what is the composition of "space". You know weightless etc.

Now some people think that it is a "void". But I don't believe this-- how do rockets propel away if they have nothing to propel "off"

So if space is composed of tiny tiny particles that might move by a photon moving or whatever- then they are latent energy.

In conclusion- if the universe has no limits then it is pure energy in either latent or actual form. If the universe has a limit-- then who knows-- I mean what is beyond. If it is not made of mass it doesnt exist.

Nap the universe is neverending in physical terms-- it has to be-- even a clearness at the boundary of the universe has to be "something" and to exist it has to have mass (latent energy) or pure energy

Therefore the universe is close to, and I would argue "is" pure energy

I defy anyone to disprove that
