Any women that is confident and financially secure would pick the dog over a diamond anyday.
Do most women want riches? I know alot that do and are quite mercenary about it. But there are also alot that don't and they are priceless!
Do most men want companionship? Hello! All humans want companionship.
I think the women's best friend is a diamond is way off base of what most women want in a best friend.

IF this is TRUE, it might denote that man prefer companionship to riches. Men prefer to share than to own.
Personally, I believe that the saying is not realistic!!! If diamonds are women's best friend than maybe Rolls Royce is men's best friend. Think about it!

Because for whatever reason, probably to make money, our society tries to get women to think that a sign of a guy's love for her is how much he is wiling to spend. Take for example the recent diamond commercial where the guy stands in the street and yells "I love this woman" and she gets all embarrassed and says "Shh Shh". Then he shows her the diamond ring and she swoons. "ohhh it is so beautiful!" Moral of story - buy her love, don't proclaim it to the world. In my opinion this is just disgusting. But a surprising number of men and women in the US think that number of $ spent = level of love. How we were enculturated to believe this I do not know. This is not an issue in Europe, where very very few women have a big fat diamond on their hand. Peculiar to America.

I don't know, but in your detailed part of the question...it kinda sums up something. But of course that "saying" cannot be proven. But I think everyone wants riches, but Girls like pretty things...thus the diamond.
The other one I think is pretty much emphasizing the loyalty of a dog to a man, or his owner. Maybe they mean man as a species and not as a gender. My sister's best friend is her dog, and she doesn't care all that much about jewelry....so you have to think about it.

If that's true than I guess I shoulda been born a man because I HATE diamonds and I LOVE my dog! A diamond just looks like a piece of glass to me. Big deal.

How can you befriend an inanimate object? Just because the media tells you something really doesn't make it true. This woman's best friend is her husband...and guess what....I just asked him and I win over the dog. Yes I'm his best friend. So you struck out here.

Because diamonds last forever and cannot be destroyed. They can become family hierlooms and more valueable(not just monetarily) over the years.
Dogs can be fiercely loyal and childlike, yet they die. A man just goes out and gets a new dog.
