A miracle. A gift. A journey. A test. A nightmare. A joy. Life is whatever you make it. It is existence. It is the span of time, the cycle from birth to death. You don't know how long it will last but what you do within that time is up to you...and life continues even after the physical body dies. The being within you never dies. Your soul lives forever in the afterlife.

This is a very broad question and so I am afraid that it will not be a short answer.
There are three distinct trains of thought. It is not limited to just three but I will use the three major ones.
First is the metaphysical. This states that everything is alive. All things are made from energy, and our senses interpret this energy. Our eyes see slow moving energy and interpret it as a rock, we feel faster energy and interpret it as wind, and we hear really high energy and interpret it as music and so on and on. So all things are living as all things are made of the same energy and so everything is life.
The next is the scientifical definition. The definition fills a few books, but to shorten it way down it comes to this; Life equals motion. For something to be alive it has to have movement and be able to grow. More specifically is able to move on its own. This definition excludes things that cannot voluntarily move, like rocks. The grey area is things that do move but not voluntarily like water and wind. Plants really work up the definition as they grow but do not move voluntarily. So if it is able to grow and move because it wants to it therefore has life.
The last definition I will use is what I call the narrow minded or religious definition. This definition is that only intelligent beings that can realize they exist are alive. So lower forms of life, things like bacteria, are not really living and so do not have to be considered. This definition also adds in the little conundrum about being able to recognize a God. So also discounts animals as being alive as they can't go to church and give mon.. er, um, I mean pray out loud. This view pretty much narrows it down to just humans. Humans have life.
So to better answer your question as I am thinking you mean it: Life is how you use your gift of being alive. Will you sit there like a rock? Or Create music? You are alive by any of the definitions, so you have life, but are you living? To live is to accomplish something. I don't mean just breathing and using up space, rather accomplish something that people will appreciate.
How many friends and acquaintances do you have? If you have a lot you are obviously doing something, if you have none, you are not doing something.
As far as human life goes successful life is measured by how many people know you, or about you. So want a successful life? Decide on a mission, like being the super librarian of your county, and then go do it. Then you will have a life and will be known by people so it will be a successful life.
Be Blessed

Biologically, life is all processes that keep the human organism alive.
I prefer to think of life as a sea voyage without a compass. We each have our own ideas about where we want to head, and we set our best course in that direction. We never really get "there" we just aim for it and our values, personalities and experiences dictate our actions along the way, which are the events which take place in our lives.

Life is Existence+Knowledge+Bliss
In Hindu Philosophy it is known as SatChitAnanda
Life is also a fraction of the human imagination's ability to create a dream. During dreams we think we are either alive or dead when in reality we are neither born nor dead
Life is a powerful illusion created by our minds in order to shield the soul from death
Both life and death are unreal dreams created by the power of the human mind for imagination

Life, term used to summarize the characteristic activities of all organisms—from cyanobacteria to plants and animals. The essence of life is reproduction, the formation of identical or near identical copies of a complex structure from simple starting materials. The increase of complexity involved in the formation of living organisms from their precursors distinguishes the processes of biological growth and reproduction from physical processes such as condensation or crystallization.

Life is a journey from childhood to the old age. It's a journey of learning, exchaning opinions/emotions and educating others. It's a journey of surviving (which goes back to Darwin's theory - "Survival of the Fittest"). It's a journey to share experience and motivating others. It's not a "Stop" but think of it as "gift" from the creator.

Most of us live our live lives with out having once known what really. there seems to be something in Destiny - or does it lie with our own nature-Which comes between us and all our glorious aims, leaving us nothing but a heap of unfulfilled ambition at the end..So few of us can go straight ahead along the pathway which we feel our lives ought to lead, we are always being turned from our intention by other people, or by love, or by pity, or by hatred,or by loss of money or health.
