Apparently, he was having an affair with a congressional aid when he was persecuting Clinton. I know Clinton lied about having the affair, but does that mean it's okay to have an affair (as a government official) as long as you hide it well or don't lie about it?

Newt is representative of the absolute hypocrisy of the Republican party. Speak of family vaues to get votes, and behave with reckless abandon, on the side. Newt is a creep, big time.

There is a big difference. Admitting sins is not a bad thing. Lying about sinning in front of the country and a federal judge is not good. Did you read the entire article? I liked this:
""There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."

Gingrich argued in the interview, however, that he should not be viewed as a hypocrite for pursuing Clinton's infidelity.

"The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge," the former Georgia congressman said of Clinton's 1998 House impeachment on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. "I drew a line in my mind that said, 'Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, and even though at a purely personal level I am not rendering judgment on another human being, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept ... perjury in your highest officials."

Hmmm.... multiple uses of the word "persecution" regarding the multiple posts on this issue.

Sounds like the seminar Democrat paid posters have punched in their time cards and are on the clock.

Gingrich's affair makes him a scumbag. Clinton's affair made him a scumbag. Clinton lying about his affair in front of a grand jury makes him a felon.

Most politicians are corrupt regardless of party affiliation.

You have to be fairly amoral to run for office in the first place. They lie to us, they to each other, take money in exchange for votes, etc.

To then chear on your significant other is not a big leap; about par for the course.

It simply goes with the territory! Between politicians and Hollywood empty heads, it's a wonder there is any morality left.

It shows he has SOME integrity and common sense not to get caught in a lie with the Christian Right on TV.

Arrogance knows no party or political stance. I feel it was best if he brought it out, rather than have it exposed ont he campaign trail, but he can forget the presidency

Nothing because it was not a surprise. He is just one of the many Republican " we are the party of family values" hypocrites. Along with him talking about the Clinton lying about sex was Bob Livingston (R- La) , Henry Hyde (R-IL) both admitted adulterers which was one of the reasons why Livingston could not take the position as Speaker of the House and it went to Dennis Hastert.
Yet he is also among those calling for Scooter Libby to be pardoned because HE was convicted for lying under oath to a federal grand jury
I guess to him and the rest of their ilk, it is okay to lie to a federal grand jury about "revenge on someone who spoke the truth about the forged documents from Niger" that was also one of the many premises used to gin up the war of choice- Iraq that has resulted in the deaths of almost 3,200 soldiers BUT it is not okay to lie under oath about sex.
There we go again, the hang up over sex vs. life and death. Sex wins every time
