Give it some time...He must have some plans of doing something with the space. If not, you could put us one of those wooden fences that you can't see through. If it's just the space the size of his garage; it shouldn't be too expensive. Your neighbor may build something else in it's place. Don't rush into anything so fast. Don't let him think it's bothering you either. Things usually work out.

I have always heard that good fences make good neighbors. His garage was actually a "large" fence. Now that it is gone, you will need to make arrangements for a substitute. You cannot force him to build one, but, sharing costs or building your own is the answer.

You can put a fence, or plant trees there. You neighbor can do it without asking your permission, unless you have a shearing wall.

put up a fench but ask him if he is putting another garage up first, he might have taken that one down because it was no good.
We will be taking ours down in the future but we will put a repacement one up.
