Probably to have taken an idea ... such as Democracy or self-rule ..... and to have made it work in modern times. By modern, I mean, breaking free and competing with the then world powers of England ... and also Spain, France etc.
I believe this degree of self rule also lead to great personal freedoms, prosperity and wealth amongst it's population. And, in becoming more of a economic power vs a subjugating military power ..... the americans have sort of created a standard of living for the world. A standard of free enterprise, personal value and wealth and independance. ( As long as we can keep it )
