Because it is what a nice person does. I like being a nice person. I feel awful when I'm mean so i try not to do it. Now caring what other people think is a totally different story. Because only certain people have that power over me. Namely my family. I can care about other people without letting their opinion matter too much.

From a selfish standpoint...caring about others means that when we are in a pinch, they will help us out because we care about them.
But from a moral and human standpoint, caring about others makes our world a better place. When we only care about ourselves, we do not worry about anyone else, nor do we do the things that make our world a better place.
Think about the time you needed help on something - if someone did not care about you, would they have helped you?
Things as simple as a smile, opening a door for a person with a full load, or allowing someone else to go ahead of you are easy things to do which show you care. In contrast, how do you feel when someone won't do those things for you?

Because when we need someone to be there, the ones that you cared about will be there for you. It's a two-way street. No one will care for you if you don't care for them.

Caring is a two way street. If you want to be cared for then you must show others that you care.

There is no ~ 'we SHOULD care' ~ and it is not a Criminal Offence if we don't ...although in France ( I'm not sure about anywhere else), if you leave an injured person by the side of the road, for example, that is an Offence as prescribed by Law (as it should be, in my opinion).
However, to not care about an/other and to not take care of this Other, it is a bit like taking out insurance. Should anything happen to you, then surely you'd like to know that somebody is going to haul your miserable carcass out of a ditch and see you to hospital (or wherever), no?
We cannot 'care' about every person, it would be too much of an overload on our own system, certainly not 'en mass.' But as individual beings it is possible ~ until we approach that ‘breakdown’ point.
In Jewish mythology there are a number of angels, the 'Lamed Vov,' who are in existence to take on 'the miseries of mankind' (en mass), because without them, mankind would crumble under the sheer miserable weight of it all.
People who are unable to 'care' about others, those who are unable to empathise or feel sympathy for others, are in some respects lucky, in other respects un-lucky as they are un-touched and in many respects, emotionally (at least) 'disabled.'
I can't remember who it was that wrote this ~
"It is only when we are touched by others, that we can truly come to know ourselves...."
but it has always struck me as remarkable insightful. And, in some ways, your question seems to markedly amplify that statement.
Best of luck to you.
Sash.

Because it is part of who we are. Imagine not caring for anyone. It makes you feel good knowing your care helps people feel better and when you think your caring has helped someone surely that can only make you feel better.

thats the thing you dont have to care for other people just dont expect them to care for you....one lonely life ahead if you dont care. most people care as its human nature and would you like to be in the sitution that person is in.
I care to much sometimes but its worth it.

Imagine a world full of individuals who are out for themselves only....the world would be in utter chaos. I think it goes back to the beginning of time, people need companionship. None of the ancient cities, the pyramids or even a present day highrise could be built without people cooperating with each other and getting along, working as a team. It is the basis of our existence. Remember the golden rule? "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". People need each other to survive, to build, to exist, to continue and to love. We each have unique qualities to share with each other.

Because no-one is an island and we are all inter-dependent-but if I don't like someone then I don't care about them-indifference is a wonderful weapon to use against people who mean the square root of fcuk all to ya-try it and see-trust!!
