from what I read it sounds like it though no site seems to say it outright- they say things like they're taking over native lands etc.

Before you decide to get one, be sure you have a system in place for 24 hour monitoring, as in a sitter, for the rest of the monkey's life.
A monkey really IS just like a 2 year old. They don't understand "NO" very well, they get into trouble any time they are awake unless you are on top of them because everything is new, interesting, fun. Like dvd players, ipods, tvs, chemicals under the sink, doors to open, chimneys to climb up, fridges, cars, other people like neighbors, every box and cabinet etc.
You can't just leave them alone, like you can a dog. When your back is turned, they will get into things and possibly run off, hurt themselves, and for sure, hurt yourself.
Plus they need potty trained just like a baby.
Unless you feel you are ready for kids, don't get a monkey. Anything you would 'dread' about kids, is true for a monkey. (Bed wetting, temper tantrums, medical bills, troublesome behavior....) But you don't have the same ability to talk to them about things, and they never get older than the terrible twos.
