how many of those boxes should be ticked surely not them all can anyone help

This would be pretty much impossible to answer without knowing everything that is checked along with what hardware and applications are installed on your system. If you are not having a specific problem I would not recommend altering any of these files.

If you are under the Startup tab in msconfig, all of the "services" listed there are programs that are not part of Windows itself. None of them are essential. If you were to turn them all off, your PC would still boot and run (probably better then it does now). However, depending on your virus scanner, it may be loading in that section. So you would want to leave on anything loading from the directory were you virus scanner is installed.

Beyond that, turn them all off. If you have an issue, you can always go back and recheck them.

This site has a compendium of unnecessary services. Go there and read. Many XP services are not necessary.
