The importance of minor characters is based on the fact that one of the major characters gets shot in the back of the head....

Adds verisimilitude, gives the main characters a context and something we can compare them to. This sounds like a GCSE question to me and I did my GCSEs a long old time ago, so I'm not really sure what they'll be looking for.
