The sirens were neato. We even did 'Duck-and-Cover' drills in school. Pres. Carter kinda knew that in the event of a nuclear event, or WMD launch, there is no winner. He was/is a smart man.
FEMA worked, it worked after Andrew wiped south Florida off the maps. Mr. Carter actually knew a bit about nuclear junk and its possible effects.
That is past, this is now, what did we learn or ignore to learn is where the root of all knowledge is.
The future is now.

Daisy,

I think that if if you were to visit towns located in the middle of 'Tornado Alley' you would still hear the sirens tested at least once a month.

I remember them wailing away when I was child growing up in rural Missouri. I don't think that since the end of WW2 any such sirens exist here in the UK.

Yes. Jimmy Carter ended the Civil Defense which was a locally, state and city, controlled organization to help deal with disasters. It was replaced with FEMA. A large slow government agency. Thanks again Jimmy.

Not only do I remember those, I remember when you could go to your local Fire Department and they'd give you free plans to build your own fallout shelter.
