Fold a lot. Too many people play too many hands trying to emulate what they see on TV. But what they don't realize is that on TV they are seeing edited highlights of an event. When they see a player win two pots back to back, what they don't realize is that there may have been ten hands in between that they didn't show on TV.
If you are in early position, you should fold almost anything. If you are facing a raise and a re-raise, you should fold almost anything. If you are facing a decent raise and a call, you should be thinking about folding.
Remember that money you don't lose, is just as valuable as money you win. I'm not suggesting you play tight and timid, but a lot of people play way too loose online and then wonder why they lose all the time. Learning when not to play is probably one of the best ways to save money.
But the best thing to do is to study and practice. Hold'em is not a game that is mastered in a few days or even weeks.

Be like Kenny, know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em. Just figure out what kind of player you are and stick with it. Me, I'm tight and I like to fold a lot. Like the first poster said, if you are in an early acting position you may want to call, but don't go in for any type of raise (unless you do have something like paired J's or better) This way if you have an OK hand and someone behind you raises a decent amount you can get away from your hand. Also, there are no true secrets, you just become a better player the more you play. Trust your gut and you will do fine.

The best secret is you need to practice, practice, and practice. There are so many things you need to learn. My dad moved to Vegas to become a professional poker player and now I'm following his footsteps. I've placed in every tournament I've been in so far against 65 or so people (although I've only been in 5 tournaments).
Instinct helps a lot. Good luck. Poker is so complicated.

Like he said, fold a lot, dont bet to much either you want to build up the questioned credibility to your opponents so when they least expect it you can knock em' out with a well strategically planned bluff!
