guilt is a built in mechanism in all of us. guilt usually comes to us when we know in our hearts what we are doing is wrong for US. it doesn't mean it's wrong for all people, it's just we are not comfortable within ourselves when we are doing it. it's hard to stop feeling guilty but as you get older you start to realize life a little more and start putting things in perspective. you realize what's important, what you want and can and should do. it doesn't mean you won't feel guilty but you'll start realizing what's important in life and that's it's okay to make mistakes here and there - after all, we are all human and are not expected to be perfect. just try to be comfortable within yourself, be proud of what you do, be happy with yourself, don't be afraid that you'll make a mistake and don't let other people put guilt trips on you. think highly of yourself and you'll find the guilt disappearing. good luck.

My grandmother had a blackbelt in guilt, so I know what you mean ("You're not coming down this weekend? No, no, that's OK. . .). I've struggled with feeling guilty for everything all my life. It's not something you can just snap yourself out of--you need to train yourself to realize you are truly not guilty--either through self-help or, even better, with the help of a good counselor.

Feeling guilty is a product of your moral up bringing or, the values your parents instilled in you while you were growing up. In general, if something makes you feel guilty there is reason to believe you should not do it. To stop feeling guilty you need to form your own value system, and most people do that as they mature.

It's one of those natural emotions that we need to deal with.
We can drown in a pool of emotions, (pity party) we can pull the plug and be sucked in...or...we can shake it off and go forward. "What does'nt kill you, makes you stronger."
