It depends what is the second language in Australian, for in stance, Spanish is the second language in the US, and in some places is a requirement to be bilingual in Spanish to get a decent job. If you want to go by easiest, I
recommend Italian. It was very easy for me to learn.

Good luck

Depends on your background really. I find Italian and Spanish very easy to learn.
For an English speaking person French is a good bet, but the pronunciation is a bit tricky.

I guess it depends what your future holds for you. What profession are you in? Where do you you see yourself in 5-10 years. I speak English and French because I live in Canada and Korean because I lived there, my wife is Korean, and I want to raise my child in Korean environment. Language is useless unless you have an application. Don't neglect Mandarin or Cantonese or India's Hindi/Poonjabi lingos...half the world speak them! Good luck
