What is the best way to hold curls?

I'm going to a dance tonight and I'm curling my hair in small spirals, so I need a good way to hold them...

gel, hairspray, or something else to hold them?

I would put a little gel in your hair as you do the curls and then spray them with hair spray when finished that way they have added support

hairspray should be good. a lot but not too much where your hair is stiff.
