a lot of factors could determine it.. the amount of salt you have digested could affect it because salt will hold water.. the amount of food in your stomach.. a lot of things

the best time to weigh yourself is in the morning when you wake up right after you go to the bathroom.. that is when it is the most accurate

and to gain 8.5 lbs by water you would have to have almost two gallons of water in your body more than normal

The ones that effect you on a day to day basis is the quantity of salt intake and water intake combined....high salt causes your body to retain water and the weight on the scale will fluctuate accordingly. To gain 8.5 on the scale, you have to drink 8.5 lbs of water (weigh your gallon jug on a digital scale and multiply by the number of times you have to fill the jug to get to 8.5 lbs) ---immediately before being weighed - after 1/2 hour your body is already using the weater.

Salty foods make my scales zoom. I weigh myself in the morning before I eat anything but after I potty. That way, I know it's consistent.
