My freind has just took on a part time bar job on top of full time job. Her new employer is asking her for a P45, which since she is still working full time she does not have. She does not want her day time employer to know about her new job, what should she do to ensure she pays correct tax, at moment she is paying emmergancy tax?

She needs to complete a P46 form and would tick statement C which indicates that that the part time job is her 2nd job. But she will be taxed at BR - Basic Rate 22% as all her allowances would be allocated to her main job.

This is a P46 form. She needs to complete and hand to new employer

does her employer of second job know she has another job? If you already have a job and want to start a second job at the same time, you will not have a form P45 to give your new employer as you haven't left your other job.

Without a form P45, your new employer will give you a P46 to complete and deduct tax from your wages at the basic rate (22%).

in the declaration section she should tick the box C which delcares that she has another job

as far as her exsisting employer knowing i think (should have pay more attention in class) he will be aware when the end of year forms are filled and given. at the end of the financial year april 5 you should receive a P60 - end of year certificate. this will tell of amounts revieved in the year and taxes and nics paid not sure if it includes from one employment or both or info from the two ( ie amount in this employment and total for the year which will differ if she has another job)

there should be no reason for her to worry about her boss knowing about her second job if it doesnt affect her work at her first job as it could simply be down to her financial situation.

The answerers who have said that emergency tax is basic rate tax are not correct. Emergency tax gives part of the wage tax free, which would not be correct if all you friend's tax free allowances are allocated to her main job. She should be on code BR, which is basic rate tax.
She needs to ask the second job for a form P46 - this she should sign indicating that this is not her only or mian job. Failure to do this will mean she will underpay tax.
Her main employer will not be told about the second job - this is confidential between her and HMRC.

your friend shouldnt need a p45, ive had loads of second jobs working in bars on the night times and they have never asked for a p45, i just had to fill a form in, cant remember what this form is but your new employer should have it.

if they still insist, just tell your new employer the situation then they will probably sort summit out, in most cases you have to be upfront with your boss, if they are good employers they will help.

has she ever thought about if her daytime employer comes in to the bar she works in!!!!

tell her not to worry about paying a higher tax rate as its her second job, it dont make much difference to your net wage at all.

Emergency tax is basic rate income tax, so she should still be paying the right amount of tax, assuming she is a basic rate (not higher rate) tax payer and earns over £5k per year in her day job.

she doesn't need a p45 cos she will pay emergency tax on her second job. everyone does and it stinks cos she won't be left with much.
