A friend of mine has a 6 year old son. He is fun, loving, sensetive and a joy to be around. But he is always in your face wanting to tell you everything and excited about what he wants to say. I personaly don't have a problem with this. (probably because I don't live with him 24/7). The mother is concerned that his behavior may be a result of her drinking alot of cola during her pregnancy. Can this be true or is it just the childs personality of being excited about his day and what he has done and wanting to share this with people?

My mother was a coffee-aholic and this was before they knew the affects of things. I'm way over 50. anyway none of the 6 of my brothers or sisters was termed hyper although 2 should have been. I speak from my experience and not as a professional but what you eat and drink does effect the fetus. Your friends little boy sounds more like habit rather than drinking coke. In other words his training rather than effects on him as a fetus. Children, and I have raised 3 as a single parent, will get in your face for attention especially if they do not get much attention otherwise and they are insecure caused by not having their special needed time with a parent. Children but in during adult conversations etc as the parents are less likely to scold them in front of other adults. The simplest way to stop that is to give the child their special time and teach them that they are not to be in your face at other times.

Some of that behavior is very normal. The child just wants attention. If he does not get enough of it every day, he will find other ways to get it such as misbehaving.

If the child is over active, and doesn't sleep well, there may be a medical problem.

I've never heard of a child being affected by the parent drinking coca cola during pregnancy, however caffiene is somewhat addictive and it is possible.

Your friend's coke habit did not make her son hyperactive. But there are dangers to excessively high caffeine consumption during pregnancy, so if anyone out there is drinking the equivalent of two cups of coffee a day while pregnant, know that the baby is getting the caffeine too.

Worse still, the parent who drinks a lot of Coke during pregnancy will probably do so after pregnancy. This sets an example of a poor health habit for the children--this is probably the biggest danger.

it's just the child, my boys mother had a needle in her arm that fed her cola all day long and they turned out ok. the problem only comes in when they drink a lot of cola when they are young (like mother like son). when they get to be school age and go to school and are not served cola during the day, they go through caffeine withdrawals a get headaches. it's a really bad headache also. only fix is a soda or a caffeine supplement which shouldn't be given to children.

I think it's just the age. My daughter is about to turn 6 and she is the same way. I pick her up from school and she's like "Guess what happened today?" and talks so fast sometimes I can't understand any of it. Children this age are just excitable.
According to the book What to Expect When Your Expecting, the only effects of caffeine consumption are: risk of miscarriage, it can block your body's irom consumption, and it can be filling, causing your appetite to not be as it should. It mentions nothing about causing excitablity in a child.

I practically lived on Pepsi during one of my pregnancies. My daughter was born 2 weeks late. Her skin was all wrinkly. She trembled so when she cried. She constantly stuck out her tongue as if trying to taste something. Doctors asked me if I was using any drugs while carrying her.
When they found out how much cola I was drinking, they said that explains it. But there were no long-term effects.

It can make the child obese when it's older. The baby can also go through withdrawal when it is born.
