if the child is younger than 18, i'd say it's the parents liability because the child is still in the parent's care.

if the child is 18 or older, it's not the parent's problem anymore what the child does. the child is not a child anymore and should deal with his own consequences.

I think that parents absolutely have to be responsible until their children are no longer legally considered children. It is up to the parent to raise the child, to teach the child the difference between right and wrong, to know at all times where their children are and what they are doing. There is nobody else in this world that chose to have the child but the parents.

I have 4 of my own. I am also a rather strict mother. I try really hard to have them live with the consequences of their own actions regardless of how bad a mom it makes me look. They are not perfect people and neither am I. But if I dont teach them responsibility and respect then who will? If I dont teach them moderation and boundaries.... where will they get them? If I do nothing but send them to school and hope that society does nothing to steer them down a dark path- then I might as well just give them up to the state at 5.

Its the parent that sees the kid in the morning after a good nights sleep-
Its the parent that comforts the bad dreams and should be discussing the issues that kid is facing.
Its the parent that needs to know that their kid is safe somewhere and who they are with and what they are doing.
If the parent has done all of these things than they will feel confident in what they have sent out to this world
If the parent has not..... then they have no clue who they have living with them. It all starts at home. How could they not know?

Nobody is perfect but if society says that you are not old enough to be an adult and make adult decisions then you are still a child- and you are the child that your parents brought into this world. And your choices are those of a child, a child that belongs to someone.

I am certain this should be the way! I think over 18 no. Under 18 yes. Not all parents though. I think they should take every case as it comes as there are parents who let there child/ren room the streets, or dont know where they are and dont care, or agree with there crimes as they did it or they are receiving the goods, parents who make it very hard for the good parents to bring there children up properly with all the crap, and peer presure... I also think it will make those parents wake up and get off there a** and be a parent. If in fact the parent of a child has commited a crime, and the parent has tryed to get help to help their child or looked into ways to handle this stuff. Should not at all be punished... I guess that will be hard to prove... I know when your child is in there teenagers years can be very testing, and my children are not perfect and no ones is, They may sneak off or lie but if you honestly care for them you shouldnt get punished but get help to receive info of some ideas to help the child.

This is something i think but everyone is different.. All the best

I don't know what you consider crimes but an example I would use is if I child plays baseball all the time in a parking lot or wherever and the risk of breaking a window is always present and the parent knows the child does this, then the parent should be liable for any damages versus the accidental breaking of a window because of poor judgment to play in a certain area once.

It depends on the age of the child.........I believe in most area's you cannot leave a child 12 and under alone without supervision - so if they are that age and commit a crime then the parents should have some responsibilty because their child should have had some adult supervision.
If the child is older they know better and are considered to be able to decided right from wrong - they need to pay the consequenses of their actions (not meaning that a younger child wouldn't have consequenses as well but the parents should also be responible).

If it is a small offense its hard to say.But if a kid is a repeated offender NO!!!! I believe Most parents do their best to raise a child. But in this day & age both parents tend to be working to make some sort of life for their familys and a retirement after the kids grow up and leave. But I also know that some kids do have a bad home-life,too!! Some parents are drinking & using drugs and a kid is confused & angry!!If the family is not have any substance abuses going on why should they be accountable??My brothers boy did some bad stuff and the state expected him to pay 20k per year for juvenile detention! I wonder myself if the average person knows that states try to get parents to pay on these detention centers??I don't believe it to be fair!!

No. Most teens/young people who commit crimes already think they're grown up. Let the punishment fit the crime. If the parents are liable, how will the young person ever learn a lesson?

Depends on the age of the child. Once the child is 18, no - you can raise your child right, teach them all the right things - it doesn't mean that they will make right decisions, they reach an age where they need to answer for themselves. 17 and under, yes - the child is still dependant on you (doesn't drive or work) and you need to monitor what the kid is doing.

depends on the age and circumstances, there is a time when kids know the difference between right and wrong, i would have to say once they enter middle school, they should be held accountable for crimes they commit, before that age I would think it should be on an individual situations

I agree to an extent. While in your custody yeah you are responsible for your child. you get child support tax credits ect for your child. you are responsible. i feel that maybe if teh child is to out of control and the parent or parents tell the judge hey i cannot do this anymore than they need to tak eteh child out of their custody and put him or her in custody of someone who can be a responsible person and give discipline, guidance, support and love to that child or inteh custody of the state. Maybe a parent shpuldnt go to jail for their childs acts, but parents need to be taking a more active roll in their kids lives. no one has any sens enow a days and i think its because what can kids teach kids when they have kids early, but how to be a kid? They get pregnant early get on welfare housing assistance and every other assistance available. The young dad who thought he was just having fun ends up paying big time because uneducated mom gets on welfare instead of getting a job and halfing the responsibilities. Young girls do see having a baby a way out of a bad home life ect because than we give them all they need to be on their own. Than the boy suffers because she sits on her *** nad collects and he has to be teh only one responsible for teh child by paying back the state for her being lazy. if parents were or took more responsibilty for their children than maybe they wouldnt be so uneducated and make these ignorant decisions.
