The "whirling dervishes" are Sufis. The question is partly the answer: less dogmatic, for sure, more spiritual and esoteric. I went to a few Sufi meetings here in the U.S. (they meet on Thursday nights, I believe). One time we just walked in a circle (I almost burst out laughing in spite of myself).
