The German Shepherd Dog or Alsatian (see Breed names), is a breed of dog. German Shepherds are highly intelligent, agile and well-suited to active working environments. They are often deployed in various roles such as police work, guarding, Search and Rescue, Therapy and in the military. They can also be found working as guide dogs for the blind. Despite their suitability for such work, German Shepherds can also make loyal and loving pets inside the home. They enjoy being around people and other animals. German Shepherds are well-suited to obedience.

Because they USED to be a great dog. Since American and some German breeders have decided to go the conformation route they have ruined the working ability of the breed. The shepherd was for many years the best all around dog to work. They served as police dogs, bomb dogs, drug dogs etc. There are still some lines that can do the work they were meant to do, mostly from the old Border Patrol lines of the Czeck Republic. These are dogs that came from the old East German lines and have been kept as working dogs. The DDR dogs were some of the best shepherds in the world, not all of them, but a lot of them. Today the once noble shepherd is being fast replaced by my favorite all time breed, the Malinois. It's a shame that these great dogs have been reduced to the sorry state they are in today.

They were bred to be capable of herding sheep but also of protecting them against wild predators like lynx and wolves and against human thieves.
This meant they were bred to be alert and capable of making quick decisions,to be fierce when needed and protective of and trustworthy with their owners property.
Like most herding breeds they are also keen to please their owner and are therefore very easy to train if you know how.
These are all ideal qualities in a guard dog.

They are very loyal to their master which makes them easier to train than some other breeds. They are also strong and powerful, with very powerful jaws. A GSD can snap a person's bone in the blink of an eye. They are very intelligent and are natural protectors. They are a breed that must alkways have something to do, they alwasy need to be working and have a job.

Because they are the most loyal of all dogs to their master. They are also very easily trained. Thats why they are used as police dogs.
Ive had two, and both soppy as hell, it depends on the way you bring them up. We never used then as a guard dog.

Because they are easy to train given the fact that other than golden retrievers they are the most intelligent dogs. Also given their size and their general stamina they can stay alert for long periods of time
