Twins have a little harder time kicking their speech off, because they have what is called "twin language." For this reason, a lot of parents of twins seek evaluations for their twins and get them into speech services early so they can catch up and won't need school services in Kindergarten.

The rule of thumb is that by two, your children should be able to put two words together. If your girls do that, I wouldn't worry too much. But even if you still have concerns, talk it over with your pediatrician. He can get an evaluation done for them to determine if they need services.

Both of my boys have received speech services and love it. My younger one wasn't putting two words together and after a year of speech services, is talking in sentences (and non-stop no less!). Good luck to you and your sweet girls!!

The goods news is that they are using words and learning what they mean, that is the first step! All children learn how to put those words together on their own time, 2.5 is not bad, that is just about the time my son was trying to put the words together...he has yet to master it at the age of 3. Give them time, don't fret. Just keep using your words and talk to them all the time, about anything and everything and they will come around.

Consider yourself lucky they are saying words as many twins only talk to each other at this age. Our 27 month old is now starting to say phrases like what is it, and such so hang in there soon they will be talking and you will wish you could just make them be quiet for a while!lol!

I have a 2.5 yr old son who is the same way. Girls will usually learn speech quicker than boys, howeever,if their speech does not improve by the time they are 3 yrs of age have them checked for autism or any learning disabilities, because i have an 8 yr old autistic son who was also this way....

Yes it is normal, and especially in twins it can take a bit longer beacuse they always have a secret lanuage with each other which you have to overcome first.

Try rewarding them with a sticker or something when they say a word that you want them to say. This might encourage them to talk to you.

if they are saying the complete word w/all yhe letters then they'll put to & too together soon.otherwise just keep an ear out for missing sounds ie;vowels. my daughter did that but with very few speech classes she was talking as good as her 5yr old brother.now she is 15y old and corrects me.poetic justice? :)

yes they are learning name of things, but not content of words. They have funny conversation due to lack of understanding, but it is innocent.
Song like the wiggles, or children books like tomas the tank engine are good for children as they help educate them and be a fun way for them to start increase word use

Don't rush it. All children develop speech at different ages. My daughter said words properly very early yet my son took forever. Social interaction helps too. They more they hear, the more they learn.

I am not sure but I think they have a lanuage among themselves. If they understand everything you say, they are probably fine.
