It depends how you count languages and dialects. The Ethnologue claims 6912 languages to be spoken. Sometimes, similar dialects have been classified as separate languages by linguists, other times, very different dialects would still be considered as the same language. In addition, in some part of the world, there are dialects continuums, where people living close to each other may have easy understanding and find it difficult to understand people living further away, however without clear boundaries to define separate languages.
