I checked wikipedia and they have a very good article.
"His conquests ushered in centuries of Greek settlement and cultural influence over distant areas, a period known as the Hellenistic Age, a combination of Greek and Middle Eastern culture. Alexander himself lived on in the history and myth of both Greek and non-Greek cultures. After his death (and even during his life) his exploits inspired a literary tradition in which he appears as a legendary hero in the tradition of Achilles.
Alexander's conquests also had long term cultural effects, with the flourishing of Hellenistic civilization throughout the Middle East and Central Asia, and the development of Greco-Buddhist art in the Indian subcontinent. Alexander and his successors were tolerant of non-Greek religious practices, and interesting syncretisms developed in the new Greek towns he founded in Central Asia. The first realistic portrayals of the Buddha appeared at this time; they are reminiscent of Greek statues of Apollo. Several Buddhist traditions may have been influenced by the ancient Greek religion; the concept of Boddhisatvas is reminiscent of Greek divine heroes, and some Mahayana ceremonial practices (burning incense, gifts of flowers and food placed on altars) are similar to those practiced by the ancient Greeks. Zen Buddhism draws in part on the ideas of Greek stoics, such as Zeno.
Among other effects, the Hellenistic, or koine dialect of Greek became the lingua franca through the so-called civilized world. "
Very clear indeed.

Well,I am going to answer you one by one.
First of all,Alexander the Great is not the most famous Greek.
There are so many ancient Greeks that have achieved really magnificent things.People like Pythagoras, Thalis , Archimedes , Ippokrates , Socrates , Plato , Aristotle , Aischylus , Sofocles , Evripides , Herodotus , Solon and many many others were unique.
And not only the ancient Greek.Even, the last century Greece is proud for Karatheodoris , Elitis , Seferis , Kavafis , Kallas etc that every educated man on Earth knows their contribution to the world's art, science and culture in generalSo,Alexander the Great is not the most famous Greek.
But,his contribution for his country and for the rest of the world was high.
The Greek civilisation was great by that time and unique in the whole world but with Alexander the Great's travels,a lot of new elements were added to the Greek culture.I am Greek but I can say that I don't like that Alexander The Great conquered all the known world but at least there was something good from that.It was good for the Greek art.
It was also good, without a doubt, for the east civilization because they came in touch with the classical Greek culture. The science were developed very much in this part of the planet, especially mathematics (and not only) in the next centuries.
The last phrase is not a question,I guess.Alexander the Great was Greek, indeed.
The only who think the opposite are some people of Albanian-Bulgarian origin in a small state of the former Yugoslavia (but it is not their fault, they have been taught like this) and some other countries that have a lot to earn if something like that was true.
Right now everything happens for the money and they try to sell out our history.

Alexander spread Greek culture all over the known world and he created the era still called today as Hellenistic. Most of classic ancient Greece personalities would have the effect they have today in modern world if Alexander did not spread their culture and teachings. Alexander started from Macedonia in north Greece to create a unique multicultural empire.

Hello dear!
Well, I have some comments regarding your question and comments:
Alexander is among the most famous Greeks, not necessarily the most, though!
As for his generation, etc., is a long question. For example, who are the Macedonians? Are they Greek? Reading the Hesiod's books we find that Macednos is Greek!
Also, Alexander's mother was Olympias, who was the daughter of the King of Epiros, while his father was Zeus, according to her, while his physical father was Philip. Further, Aristotle was his teacher and so on!
Also, they were all (Alexandre and soldiers, etc.) speaking Greek, having Greek names, gods, etc....
This is what we have found out from History and away from brainwashing!
