To be honest, I cannot advise pulling a weapon unless you are very familiar with using it. I dont mean you've been to the shooting range once or twice and you can hit a target, its a different story when you have a person in your sights, and you may freeze up, dont say you wont, because you'll never know until you have been there. I say this because i worry that if you were to freeze, you may get youself killed. And you do not want to use a firearm, in self defense or not, unless you have a conceal and carry permit.
Forget the weapon, think GAS, hit the gas and get the hell out of there, if you cant hit the gas because someone is in front of you, neither can he. if this is the case, think reverse.
Aside from this, assuming you have a conceal and carry permit, and you will not hesitate to fire upon another person, I would suggest waiting till you get out. While you are still in the vehicle, the car jacker will view you as a threat, once you have exited, and he is trying to pull away, he is considering other vehicles and looking for police, he has forgotten you. Drop to kneeling stance with your weapon as he begins to pull away, watch your breathing, then gently squeeze off one round, right through the back of his skull, however this will likely result in your vehicles being damaged in a wreck. I think this is the most logisticly intelegent move, because you can have time to carefully aim, however, at this point, he poses no threat to you, and you would likely end up in jail for unjustified use of your weapon and possibly manslaughter.
But, again, I do not advise any of this, other than hitting the gas, if you feel that it would endanger you, please, get out and let them have the vehicle, its not worth your life, unless its a 1971 Plymouth Baracuda Convertable w/ 426 Hemi, you better die defending that car, lol, just kidding. Hope this helps, Good Luck and stay safe.

Around here, they pull a gun on you while you are getting in or out of your car at a mall or gas station, and most people don't carry a gun, so they have to just give up the keys.
I read a story where a lady threw her keys away, and the car jacker got flustered and ran away. But he could have just shot her.
Seems like On-Star cars would deter some of the smarter car jackers since they can be tracked by satelite.
If your cell phone is in the car, they might be able to trace that also, I think they can locate those now.
So why not just give up the car, and let the police track them down and deal with them? They are better trained and equipped.

Buy the time you get out of the car and assuming he has a gun you'd be dead already. There have been officers in the past that have shot through there cruisers windows so I say while in the car.I could ad something humorous to this thought but the whining cry babys on here would report me.

I would shoot from inside the car.
This way no broken glass, the jacker wouldnt have the opportunity to wreck my car, If I were to let the jacker in my car then shoot, Then there is blood all over the interior.
Yes, shoot from the inside

If you got out, he'd probably beat you or shoot you or stab you.
If you stay in, he'll probably see you pull the gun and run away or shoot you first.
Best to just give him the damn car.

You may not shoot someone merely for stealing something from you. You must show that your life is likely to be lost if you didn't shoot. (so plant a gun on the SOB if he doesn't already have one)
