Although the church never approved of the practice, enuchs or castrati worked primarily in/for for the church! They were young boys who had exceptional unbroken voices and were therefore engaged to sing in the Catholic church choirs. When they got older, in order to stop their voice from breaking, they were castrated, and continued to sing for the church.
Past the age where they could pass as choir "boys" they were cast out -some were fortunate and organised enough to embark on their own careers and find success as professional singers, and held concerts or were engaged to sing at events in private homes, palaces etc. accross Europe.
The tragedy about the Castrati is that their out-of-the-world voices were never recorded. Alessandro Moreschi, the last castrato was the only one ever recorded, and the recordings are not of a quality good enough to capture that of his voice properly.
I recommend one of my favourite movies for information and enjoyment! It's called Farinelli (Il Castrato), about Carlo Broschi a.k.a Farinelli, the most famous castrato.

Because they can't spell "eunuchs".
Traditionally, the lame, dwarves, eunuchs, and others with congenital handicaps were disallowed from becoming rabbis in the Judaic faith, because these were held to be signs of God's disfavour of the individuals in question. It's in the Bible in Leviticus, I think.
The Eastern Orthodox churches still persist with these practices, but they are officially frowned on the Catholics and Protestants. Nevertheless, I believe they continue to exist informally and secretively. I cannot think of a single priest or minister who has some kind of physical handicap, although those with mental deficiencies are beyond counting.
Incidentally, I don't know how they knew whether or not you were a eunuch.
