Nethack :) Free, and different every time you play it!
Failing that, probably command & conquer or counterstrike, both of which I have lost many, many hours of my life to...

Street Fighter II on the Megadrive.
I was obsessed with this game, but could only play it in arcades, as I didn't have a SNES. When I heard it was going to be released on the Megadrive complete with a new controller, I was the happiest person in the whole world! I must've played that constantly for about 6 months before even feeling like I needed a new game. I was so obsessed with getting the combos right and inventing new ones.
Re PS2, yeah, definitely Resident Evil 4 is up there. Absolutely excellent game. HUGE game with excellent weapons, bosses, storyline etc which can be played again and again.
I'd have to say GTA: San Andreas is the best though. Just the sheer scope of the game. I've finished it, and yet I haven't truly finished it, as I haven't got all the horseshoes, all the unique jumps, all the photos etc etc. It's a truly great game.

Has to be Mario Kart. Fantastic game. There have been around 4 or maybe even 5 versions now but basically they are all the same game. I played Mario Kart in the mid 90's and still play it now over a decade later. It's had pretty much the longest life span of any game I have played (apart from Pacman or Space Invaiders which are good but can't compete for shear fun while playing).

If you really want the best game ever I would say either Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo 2
My reason is is that i have never played a campaign or co-op as good as Halo: Combat Evolved and the 4-player multiplayer is AMAZING
also Halo 2 has the best online multiplayer, its still one of the most played games on xbox live even though it is on an outdated console and was released 3 years ago!
Doesnt that show how good it is ?
The Halo franchise is the best shooter franchise
amazing.

This is a bit hard since I have to many classics to mention, but here is my top 5:
1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Resident Evil 2
3. Grand Theft Auto III
4. Super Mario 64
5. Goldeneye (N64 version, NOT the crappy remake!)

The Tomb Raider Series, especially 2 for me. Pure escapism and adventure.
So Tomb Raider 2.
Love Resident Evil too. Tekken. Soul Blade. Bishi Bashi. Croc. Rayman. Crash Bandicoot. Mario. Sonic. Oh, I like loads of them!
Best gaming system for me is PS1. Might not be the best graphics, but its real arcade action that wiped out the 16bit and 8bit games systems. Also the discs don't take years to load, last much longer and withstand greater punishment than PS2 format.
# When I mentioned Arcade action earlier, wasn't it great when we could get those games at home, which previously had blown us all away in the arcades. House Of The Dead 2 was brilliant on Dreamcast, and Ready To Rumble 2. Didn't cost us £££'s too, to complete the games!
Croc always reminds me of when my daughter was tiny. She used to fall asleep to the music on the desert levels. Sweetheart.
That PS1 has a soft spot in my heart for all the good times we played together, including leaping about on the dance mats, racing each other in Gran Turismo and shooting aliens in Area51. Love it.
As for retro, my best game from childhood was Rescue on the Spectrum 128k. There, now I've let on how old I am. ha. ; )

Well, going WAAAYYY back in time, Beachead for the Commodore 64 was fab, Captain Blood and Elite for the Amiga 500, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is Ab-fab for the PS2 and for the PC prob DOOM 2 and Halflife. As somebody has already said there are SOOOOOOO many great games, but quite a few stinkers. Anyone remember Rise of the Robots for the Amiga (I think)?

I agree with Resident Evil 4, but dont forget Resident Evil 2
In my opinion Day of the Tentacle on the PC is the best ever, for pure entertainment value. Anyone can play it, from 9 year olds to 90 year olds.
Also
Freedom Fighters on the PS2, for pure playability and Aesthetic feel.
Dawn of War for best RTS game on PC.....just awesome
And you gotta love Asteroids

The answer is obvious: Sonic the Hedgehog on a 32 bit Sega Mega Drive!!!
It has all the components of an excellent game: catchy theme tune, hero trying to save the planet from the evil clutches of a villain mastermind; said villainous mastermind creates weird levels for hero to go through; bunnies and birds released from villain's evil spell... It's just awesome! It was revolutionary for its time and people STILL love playing it, hence its release on other gaming consoles such as PS and Nintendo. I *heart* Sonic! (Not too keen on his annoying mate "Tails" though).
Failing that... It's gotta be Street Fighter
