If God is the one who put the lying spirit in them, then these prophets were not really doing anything wrong, were they? Because they only prophesied what God or the angel of God told them to say. What is a reasonable explanation?
"Micaiah continued, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD : I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the host of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. 20 And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?'
"One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.'
22 " 'By what means?' the LORD asked.
" 'I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said.
" 'You will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD. 'Go and do it.'
23 "So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you."

This might not be of any comfort of help. But sometimes things are not for us to completely understand, especially when it comes to the Mind of Yahweh.
As mere humans, we do not have the capability or capacity to fully understand or comprehend His Whole Will or Purposes. For some reason, He chose to use 'lying spirits'. Just like for some reason He closed the heart of Pharaoh, when Moses told him to 'let the Israelites go.'
If we get hung-up on the reason's behind everything, that Yahweh does or does not do; according to OUR understanding. We run the risk of missing out on the bigger things, He has for our lives and may end up committing Idolatry; by putting Him into a box of our understanding and comprehension of His Ways.
If we let our minds limit what Yahweh can or can't do, we are making Him fit our mold of what He is; instead of letting He be Himself. Which is the full spectrum of all things - loving and just, compassionate and unforgiving, merciful and eternal judge, etc...
"It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty
and miss the way.
-- Proverbs 19:2
Maybe one of the most important things we can do to grow in spiritual maturity is to find the right things to get passionate about. We can get riled up about some of the most inconsequential issues. We can get wildly passionate about everything from sports to chocolate pie. But zeal, passion for an issue, must be anchored to spiritual wisdom and understanding. We can get worked up over something and completely miss the will of the Lord because we were blinded by our own passions. While I want zealous people around me, I want them to be zealous for God's things and for Kingdom issues."

After reading the responses from the various contributors I'm tempted to respond to their self-serving unbelief.
The short answer to your question is so God could accomplish His will. Ahab was evil.God wanted him dead.
Sounds really Machivellian. Don't forget there was one prophet who spoke the truth (Micaiah).
If wickedness had not already taken ove the hearts of Ahab and Jehoshephat they would have listened to the true spirit of the Lord and obeyed.
They were already corrupt and did not listen to the spirit of truth but to the LYING SPIRIT because they were already corrupt!

For the same reason he hardened the pharaoh's heart a bunch of times in Exodus, he was a jealous god and seemed to enjoy tormenting everybody. It's difficult to believe that the god at the end of the bible is supposed to be the same as the one in the beginning.

do you not see the free will in action here? God plainly told him that these were lying spirits and yet he chose to believe the lying spirits over God. That was the point - what will you choose. God did not "force" anything - man chose. The prophets did not "have" to lie - they could have resisted and gone to God themselves - but they chose to yield to the wrong spirit. God simply new the nature of the man and knew what he would choose - but it was still his choice.

i'm not sure. would not remember in the event that they have been his prophets or no longer... the element right it is that GOD himself despatched a mendacity spirit..... *choose some people could discover ways to study* in case you do a seek interior the previous try, you stumble on he does this a pair of situations... to boot as repents. The definition of the be conscious "stable" could be diverse for God whilst in comparison with us... I advise, it particularly is HIS be conscious, yet interior the Bible, he would not shop on with it... and he would not anticipate his very own people to maintain on with it each and all the time.

Don't worry, God also hardened Pharaoh's heart!
Seems pretty cruel, doesn't it?
He increased a Jewish ladies beauty when the Jews were in trouble, causing the king to go mad & declare that any who touch the Jews, & he made her his queen.
The things he does to people!
P.S. What gives with God forcing people to lust, sin, etc?

it was not God that lied...
But He let it happen because the prophets that surrounded the king were only concerned about gold and not Gods will so it was EZ to use them.
PS one of the questions you answered was about Islam...
You have been lied to about that religion, to relay know what they believe you must go back to their scriptures...
Take a look at this web sight it puts it all in one place for you.
God bless you!

if I believed all the bible says I would have to believe in a borish moron that takes relish in creating people only to torture them after having them kill one another like a horible bully and the this cruel self contradicting fool would be a childish idiot and smart enough to create an imperfect world at the same time ... I just can't swallow that and more.

No God is not the author of sin... It is like a parable... God didn't personally sent the spirit... He just allowed a spirit to deceive Him..... He allowed a negative situation....
