14year olds smoking!?

Question

Today I was waiting outside to pick up dinner for my family. Anyway as soon as I got out of the car, these two girls came up to me (both had a cake face of make up and were wearing 'skanky' clothing).

These girls tried to intimidate me into buy them cigarettes. I told them I was only 17 and sounded extremly shocked when I told them I didn't smoke. I ended up ignoring them and I got called a s l u t etc.

If this wasn't bad enough, these girls threatened to 'give me a hiding' just because I wouldn't buy them cigarettes.

I told them even if i wanted to buy them cigarettes, I wouldn't be so stupid to break the law for two girls like them with no respect and rude.

They walked off.

I really really don't understand why anyone would want to smoke. How does it make them seem cool? They are just poisioning their bodies.

Does anyone have any idea?

Hiding means beating some one up.

Lori- How was I rude to them? I was not prepared to get myself into trouble with the law for two girls who were so rude to me and called me a sl*t, among other things. Please explain to me how I was rude to them?

ya, i think thats disgusting, im 14 and there are kids in my grade that smoke im friends with sum of them, but i just think its dumb like with the amount of education about how bad they are, i just can not see why they would smoke, to rebel i guess, like in our entire high school (not very big, but still) about maybe 30-ish pple smoke (regularly) and trust me, there all disgusting looking and i bet u if u went to the "smokers area" at our school nobody there would have an average above 70... lol and ya we have a smokers area, 2 actually, and ones in front of the school, which i think isnt really a great place, ha! and guess wat, our principle smokes too.... but shes old and probably didnt have as much education about cigarettes when she started..... so ya, i dono why they smoke i told sum of them that every cigarette you smoke you lose 5.5 minutes of ur life (it was in our science text book) and they said they didnt care..... and lol the best response was "well ive only smoked for a year" so thats only a couple days maybe that ive lost..... but they failed too realize that they'll be smoking for the rest of their (short and awfull) life.

Having smoked since I was 15, and my boyfriend since he was 14 or so, I have been able to put young smokers into a few categories: Those who smoked because they wanted to look cool in some situation and got hooked asap, those who smoked because they wanted to look cool and continued to smoke to look cool for quite some time until they were hooked, and those whose parents smoked around them, and they were the kids that got the other ones to smoke to look cool.

In the end, they are smoking to look cool, and without a pack and a light and some lung cancer, they just aren't cool enough. I think the ultimate revenge is waiting another month or two, until when they don't have a smoke and realize that they start getting the shakes, etc and then they have to try to quit. It isn't pleasent.

As for why it makes them cool... when I was younger I was right stressed and my younger sister smoked at parties (which I didn't know), so she offered me a smoke and told me to just try it. So we did. After that I started smoking and hiding it, quit, and then started smoking in public. After a bad break up it gave me lots of attention and the likes. Being a smoker really is like owning a dog... you are part of this little group of people that know something that other people can't understand. You go out and ask for a light and you get to know new people because the same people are in the same place at the same time every day having a smoke. You see them quit and come back, you see them quit for good. It is like its own little, digusting social world that most people wish they never joined.

Smoking is an addiction that usually starts as a matter of "invincibility." "I won't get addicted, I'll just do it occasionally because it's cool." "Other people die of lung cancer, but I won't." It seems to me when younger people start smoking, it's a way of tempting fate. Personally, I have smoked for a very long time, and wish so much that I had never ever started. It is so hard to quit. I think it's very sad that despite all the research people still start smoking so young.

PS Good job not buying them cigarettes though! If everyone would do that it would be impossible for anyone under 18 to smoke. (Not like that will ever happen, but still - at least you didn't contribute to it!)

that sounds pretty bad but I'm 17 and started smoking at 13/14is a few friends did to but It's not an excuse for that kind of behaviour thats totally rude I wouldn't treat another person like that

Lack of attention at home. Kids at that age want to experiement with different things like sex, smoking, drugs, booze because their friends do it and they feel left out if they don't do it. Peer pressure as well.

yes it is a bad i dea because your lungs arent mature enough to handle the smoke like an adult can, just quit. its the only way; will power is what is needed, dont know if u play sports at all but smoking will effect your endurance to play sports

those girls do that for attention from the "bad boys"
or they are probably not popular so they think smoking will make them seem cooler.

they just want attention from guys and parents and alot of the time they are hurt i'm fourteen and if i smoked my parents would kill me plus i see no pleasure in it . it is just a waste of money
