I worked nights in a nursing home and sat by people when they die. When your kidneys shut down, you don't feel anything, you jusy fall asleep and don't wake up. The mouth opens because the muscles are relaxed so they will no longer hold the jaw shut. I promise you, your dog felt nothing, but at least he was with his humans when he passed.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your four legged friend. What a wonderful life he must have had to life to be 15 years old. I'm sure the vet would not have allowed you to take him home if he thought there was a possibility that the dog was in pain or suffering. The fact that his mouth was slightly ajar was probably due to his facial muscles relaxing prior to death. Please do not feel badly as you did all you could for your friend and I hope you are someday reunited with him across the Rainbow Bridge.
I have included a wed site that is nothing more than pet memorials. You can go there and cry if you need to. May your dog rest in peace.

I am soooo sorry for your loss. Yes that is normal. Please try to feel some comfort at knowing your dog probably passed away peacefully in the loving home you so lovingly provided for him for so many years. I am sure your dog would have rather gone the way he did instead of in the vet's office. Check out a poem on the Internet... Rainbow Bridge.com. Three years later this poem still hangs on my refrigerator. At present I have a Doberman with cardiomyopathy,is on meds, but my vet told me she will eventually go as fast as your dog did and there is nothing I will be able to do. My heart goes out to you.

Yes it is common. You shouldn't feel bad at all, you seemed to have done everything a faithful pet owner could do. I commend you for taking care of your dog during his sickness. Mine had a heat stroke last summer, I was told he would live 2 to 4 days. He did just like your dog, except he passed away on my kitchen floor. I tried nursing him and babying him, but he just couldn't hang on. His mouth was open some, he never made a sound. I'm so sorry for your loss.

From your description I would say the dog died peacefully. He may have been trying to pant at the last. I don't think it was likely he was choking.
I'm sorry for your loss. 15 years is a long life for a dog, but that doesn't make it any easier to accept.
The dog probably understood as much as animals can that he was loved and that he wasn't dying alone. That should give you some comfort.

it is very common for a dog to pass away with his mouth open, and sometimes when they pass they can have their eyes open too. Does not mean he suffered because he didnt. He died where he was comfortable and spent 15 years of his life, a place where he was loved unconditionally and where that unconditional love was returned no matter what. It is ok to cry, I am still crying for my girl Leah who passed a month ago to cancer.... I can still see myself crying for her in years to come.
I am so sorry for your loss, our dogs are playing together happily, pain free over Rainbow Bridge until we meet again

Hi..im so sorry 4 ur dog..i have one also and she is 10 years old and im so afraid of her getting old..i saw many dogs dying unfortunately and i think its natural for them to die with their mouth a little open .if the doctor said he wasnt in pain, then he knew what he was talking about.so no reason 4 him to choke.please try to calm down think he lived 15 years which is great for a dog.
Good luck

Yes! It’s normal when dogs have their mouth slightly open.
I’m sorry to here about your animal, I had a dog for 16 years and loved her very much, I feel sad every time I think of her.
There was this one night I was going to sleep and just before I feel asleep I said Cleo I miss you, I wish I could see you in my dreams.
The next day I didn't think anything of it until a week later, I seen this commercial on television and this dog was talking and DeJaVu set in and instantly I remember dreaming of my dog the week before and I remember talking to her.
I remember holding her in my arms and she was talking!
But I can’t remember what she was saying, I know it's something simple but I can’t remember for the life of me...
After remember that, I felt so pleased that she visits me in my dreams.
I miss her so much, and as I'm writing this my eyes are watering, it's been since 1997 but I still think of her so much!
I love you Cleo!
Please remember all the good times you had with your pet and pray that you see her/him again... :)
I hope this help you as it did for me.

No, he wouldn't have suffered, his mouth opened because he was so relaxed, he died naturally and you did all you could for him, the best way he could have died was in his sleep, in his own home surrounded by the ones who loved him, believe me it is more heartbreaking to have them put to sleep. I am so sorry for yopur loss a dog is part of the family, but remember he is not suffering any more.
