division is alot of money maybe in to the billions of dollars. reducing the marine corps to 1 division, would accomplish 2 things. first of all it would save the US govt a whole lot of money. think about it, keep an open mind, how often do amphibious assaults happen? once every 50 years? thats the average. i will correct myself, 1 division for the fleet, and about 2 regiments for embassy duty. why do we need 4 marine divisions? (one in reserve) we have a large army that can accomplish alot of the land fighting. the second thing it will accomplish is that the marines would be more elite since it is a smaller unit. and the last thing is to eliminate alot of the marine top brass and just blend it in with the navy or army. i think navy is more appropriate because the marines already fall under the dept of the navy. with all the money we would save, we can build levees in new orleans that can withstand a category 5 hurricane and feed hungry americans, how many of u agree?

there is no need for 3 marine divisions, there is no enemy that large that is a threat.

First, you should educate yourself about the Marine Corps. If you think the role of the Marines is limited to amphibious assaults you are sorely mistaken. The Marine Corps is actually looking to increase its size in the near future, and that is good for everyone.

As for building levees in New Orleans... the State of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans need to take some accountability for their history of corruption rather than blaming all of its problems on the Federal Government.

While we're at it... why dont we get rid of most of the Navy? There isnt battle ship wars anymore. Or the Army, arent they the same as Marines? What about the Air Force, dont the jus fly planes and stuff? Oh wait, the Coast Gaurd doest do anything either... surely then can go, right? Have you ever served?

Grow up. The branches of the military are very different. The Marines are elite, the have some of the toughest training in the world. You can not just take away most of one branch. If we're talking about payscale, military families are paid next to nothing, and while combined that my be a lot of money, but what are you going to do if/when there is war waged on US soil? Are you willing to be drafted to make up the difference?

Even though we have 4 Divisions, we are still the smallest branch of the US military. Even though we are small (180,000 - 200,000), we are still the vanguard of the military. Why don't the US downsize the Army? What good has the Army done so far in recent combats? The Marine Corps trains in the most f*cked up conditions because of funding. Our weapon systems are old and is becoming outdated. Because all Marines are Rifleman, why don't the US give us the weapons the Army is using? Why not give it to a group of people who can use it effectively? When Americans think about military, they think about the Army because of it's size (nearly 1 million). People think about the Marine Corps because of our work ethics. So why change something that is effective?

What planet are you from? These are issues that came up decades ago and have been resolved. It has nothing to do with money. The question from me to you is, do you want to sleep at night knowing there are people out there at the ready to defend us and others around the world who need defending? or would you rather sleep with one eye open a a gun ****** in your hand? GET A LIFE!

No way!

I have seen what the Marines are doing out here (in Iraq) and we need as many as we can get!

And what are you talking about-- amphibious assaults? You think that's all the Marines do? *sigh* They are out here doing amazing work, just like the rest of us. We can't afford to spare anyone!

never downsize the point to is increase the ranks of all branches. downsizing the marines would make us very vulnerable to attack. plan ahead have the people in place. you never know what could happen in a moments notice in war. be prepared for anything. your downsizing plan is half baked at best and will never happen

yeah, that would cut logistics quite a bit; but yes, there is such an army: the Red Chinese! and they're getting too technologically advanced for my liking!
