The differences lies in the original material used for making the mash or liquid for fermentation to obtain the alcohol. In general, rum is made from sugar cane, whisky from grains and brandy from fruits.
In the world of food and beverage, there is no right or wrong. All is up to personal preferences. But I would say to start from rum, light to dark. Then whisky, from blended scotch to single malt. And then brandy last, from fruit brandy to the finest cognac last.

Rum comes from sugar cane, brandy comes from grapes and whisky comes from grain. They are all hard liquor. Taken with water they probably have fewer calories than the equivalent volumes of wine or beer; as to which is better, stick to clear, chilled, filtered water.

They are all good to me. I think whisky has the least hangover of the 3. In moderation.
