How not to strikeout when talking to a girl?

I have a bad habit of striking out with girls during the initial phase of the conversation. I'm average build, 5-8", not GQ as a friend put it but reasonable. I talk about school, class, what they do, try to get their favorite music, subjects, etc. but I always reach a dead end. I'm been batting a .000 for about a year. Any advice?

Hey man, at least you're going at it. And now you're actively seeking help. Good for you, you're on the right path.
Looks have very little to do with it, so don't worry about that.
Obviously your topics are a little drab. Come on, everybody talks about that stuff! Let me give you some ideas, some I use myself that work well, and others I don't but I hear about often:
The opinion grabber: You walk up to at least two girls and start like this - "Hey girls, me and my buddy were arguing about something and we can't seem to agree, so we thought we'd ask some ladies' opinions." Then, you can proceed with any sort of opinion you think girls would love to get into, like "who pays on the first date, the man, the woman, or both?" or "Is chivalry really dead? I tried opening the door for this one girl and she turned around and was like 'I can open it myself, thank you!'" Any opinions about fashion, women and men, dating, etc., will get the girls talking and loving you for bringing up an interesting conversation.
The sudden death career game: You need a partner for this. Do this at a social gathering or a place with lots of women. There are two steps, you can do both, or either one, doesn't matter. First step is like this: Walk up to a girl or girls and go "Me and my buddy have a bet. He thinks you're a ___ (occupation), I think you're a ____ (goofy job), which of us is right?" This is almost always followed up by them telling you what they do, and then asking you "so what do you do?" Here comes part 2: you and your buddy make up jobs for each other on the spot and run with it. So your buddy might say you're a janitor, and you can say he's a male stripper, and you just go with it. The wackier the better. Remember, this isn't an interview. Girls just wanna have fun, so make it fun.
Cocky and funny: This is one i have yet to master, but it's still fun to try. No more straight answers. Only answers that make you sound cocky, but with a sense of humor. This takes some practice, because sounding cocky and not funny makes you seem arrogant and insecure, being funny but not cocky makes you sound like a goofy little kid. Sit and home and think of some really boring questions you get all the time from girls and how you can answer in a cocky and funny way. Some examples:
Her - "So what's your job?"
You - "Why, are you one of those girls who only dates rich guys?"
"Loving life, baby."
"I don't have one, my sugar mama takes care of me."
Her - "Do you have a girlfriend?"
You - "No, but I'm taking applications."
"No, and I'm not taking applications right now, so don't even try."
"That depends, how much are YOU offering?"
"You want me."
This is a lot of fun, and chicks love it, trust me.

Another point I think is important is how much time you spend talking to them. So many guys keep trying to push the conversation and just wind up sucking all the energy out of it. Always leave on a high note. Stick to 3 minute conversations and then just SCRAM. Leave them wanting more. If you leave RIGHT when the convo was getting good, it leaves them with a great impression of you, and a great chance of meeting up again.
