I'm not reall sure if you're looking for a specific cake recipe, of if you're just looking for something special to make your cake taste better. It all really depends on which sort of cake you're making.....but for a really special tasting cake, I love a bit of nutmeg or cinnamon....obviously along with chocolate.

You know, it may not seem intuitive, but actually cake mixes bought in stores often turn out and taste the best.
But this doesn't mean that you have to prepare the cake as is with boring icing.
There are a number of cookbooks in the market (or free borrwed at the library) which have recipes for "glorifying" cake mix into a fabulous dessert.
If you can't find one of these cookbook treasures, try chilling your cake, then cutting it into layers, spreading jam between each.
Mound a variety of fresh fruit on the top of the cake, and ice the exposed cake areas with whipped cream.
This makes great practice for learning how to make thinner layers of cakes, because if a catastrophy does occur and your cake messes up, it can easily be cut into chunks and placed in a large attractive serving bowl or trifle dish, with layers of whipped cream or pudding every so often between layers of cake chunks.
Top the very top with whipped cream and a few choice berries and a sprig of mint.
(an additional option, if you don't mind alcohol, is to lightly drizzle the cake during layering in the bowl with a flavored liqueur, like Grand Marnier. But do allow time for the cake to mellow--several hours, and don't overdo your hand when sprinkling).
The best cakes, obviously, for this kind of treatment, would be white cake, yellow cake, and anything fruity, like strawberry, or even angel food cake. Something like chocolate is good as well, but keep the fruit to something that pairs with chocolate, such as strawberries or raspberries.
Have fun!

The best recipe I know for sponge cake is the traditional same quantities of everything, but using heavy cream or whipping cream instead of butter. The cake comes out very light and airy. Using a food processor makes the mixture even more so.
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
1 cup heavy cream or whipping cream
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
Preheat oven to 375° F.
Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl.
Whisk cream and sugar. Beat eggs and add, one by one, together with a tablespoon of flour each time.
Fold in remaining flour.
Transfer it to buttered baking pan.
Bake in middle shelf for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

You can use a cake mix ans add an extra egg and a box of instant pudding mix to it (anything that would add to the flavor of the cake mix)
eg: White Cake Mix w/ vanilla or cookies and cream pudding

Go buy yourself a cake mix. Pick the flavor you like best. It's easier that way.

if you are looking for a "special ingredient" try mayonnaise or sour cream in place of milk or oil. oooh, also try apple sauce if you want low fat.
