I'm getting a Dalmatian puppy in a few months and I am planning to feed her a mainly raw food diet due to their health problems. I was told that I should also feed some dry food so I am looking for a top quality dog food.

I fed my other Dalmatian Pedigree all her life and she was in excellent condition until the day she passed away. I am told that Pedigree is no long a good brand of dog food.

I'm not sure if I should get Innova or not. Is it a good quality dog food or is there something better that I can find in a PET STORE (or vet office) in AUSTRALIA - not online or in USA/UK etc.

It's very expensive ($80 for 15 - 20kg - around 30 - 40lb) so I don't want to pay so much for something that is poor in quality.

sounds good... but when I hear raw and dalmatian in the same post... I have to add... don't feed liver or any organ meats to a dalmatian!

They have a unique system that does not deal well with organ meats. They need their protein as pups, but as adult dogs they need less protein than other dogs. Their urine is chemically different too! It's amazing the things I've learned about dalmatians lately!

My boy's site shows him at play http://jpassoc.com/junior !

He's a miniature dalmatian from a long line of miniature dalmatians, who were bred for small size.

Innova is by far one of the best quality foods on the market.
I'm with everyone in that I'm not sure why it is so much more expensive...unless shipping it from the USA really bumps the price up that much.

I did a quick conversion and a $37US bag of food should only cost about $47AU.

I would hunt around and see if you can find it cheaper (try not to buy from vet offices as they most often charge more).

HOwever, if you can't find it cheaper and cannot afford the $80 a month, try looking at other foods with similar ingredients...Merrick, Solid Gold, Fromm, Canidae, Evolve, Dick Van Pattens, etc. I'm not sure if these are sold in Australia but their websites should have a store locator.

Good luck and cudos to you for looking into high quality foods.

Innova is a very good food. I also choose to feed RAW and have a kibble "filler" as well.

In addition to raw I feed Innova "EVO RM" or Solid Gold "Wolf Cub" or "Barking at the Moon".
EVO is Innova's side brand that does not contain wheat or grain.

You are going to always pay top money for a "human grade" dog food, which is what Innova and Solid Gold produce.

This is a good link for analyzing your dog food options. It might be helpful since I'm not sure whats available to you there in the stores.

do keep in mind that the foods shown are not all the foods offered. Like the Innova and Solid Gold, the foods shown are not the ones I choose, I generally try and avoid foods with Chicken as one of my dogs is allergic to it.

You will find, that because the dog foods are higher end and have a more balanced nutrition, that your dog will eat less because he's full AND his body isn't telling him that he's missing some vitamin or mineral so he will stop eating.

With your addition of the raw she will definitly have no problems in the eating department =)

Also as far as a store goes.
When I was first looking, since I hate ordering food via the web... I did some web reserach on Google Local and found a Natural Pet Store "Next-to-Nature" that supplies about every kibble, canned, and raw frozen diet thats out there. I love this store.. hopefully you can find a similar store locally for you.

The Innova EVO line of dog food is about the best you can get here in the US. It is excellent quality, MUCH better than Pedigree. Many people use the EVO line to supplement raw diets. It is quite pricey, but it is so packed with calories and nutrients that you don't feed nearly as much as you would feed if you used a lesser quality dog food (just check out the feeding recommendations for it on the bag). Great choice in dog food!

Innova is a very good quality dog food. Congratulations on the Dalmatian you will soon be getting. We had one years ago and he was a wonderful old guy.

It is a very good brand. It has a lot of great ingredient for balance diet. I brought it once for my dog but his stomach doesnt seems to go too well with this. Some dogs cant disgest food that are too rich. I am using sensible choice, it has great nutrient and is good for their tummy.

Look up homepathic dog food on the Internet. Look for Dr. Jane something or other (can't remember the name). It is a natural dog food complete with vitamins and healthy food products. Not cheap but not too expensive.
