96 grand cherokee limited 4WD?

how do you know your in 4 low besides what it says on the "INFO center". does it have to be manually switched or for some strange reason "eletrically or what ever" could it go by its self.

Your jeep has a manual shift transfer case, meaning that in order for you to put the jeep into 4Low you have to manually move the lever. No it will never do that by itself. An easy way to tell if its in 4Low is to drive down the road with it and it will rev higher, and not want to go as fast.

You should have a lever right next to your right leg when sitting in the vehicle to change it in and out of 4wd. it should look like this:
