I live in the UK and yes, Americans do have accents. Everyone sounds "normal" to themselves.

People in the UK imitate the US accent by pronouncing every syllable of every word. US people enunciate there sounds much more than the people in the UK. We abbreviate a lot of words. We usually imitate the actors in movies who we see, which have the accent everyone has in American (besides people in the South)

Basically, when we are young we learn our language and train our ears to what sounds "normal."

P.S.-unless you're a trained actor, just imitations of British accents sound nothing like we do, just like my impersonation of an American is probably awful.

Yes, Americans have accents but there is no stereotypical one. For example, people on the west coast such as California are going to sound much different than people down south in Mississippi. The south has more of a drawl. The west coast kind of hangs on to their r's when they talk. Just like up in New York, they have different accents - like Brooklyn or the Bronx. Watch a few American movies.

Yes, most definitely there is an American accent.

With the exception of Canada, no other English speaking country says their 'r's at the end of the word. I've got some Australian friends who like to tease me by stressing all consonants in the words they speak.

Proof? I teach English in Korea, where (along with Japan and China) employers pay for educators to teach "American English." The amusing thing is that, at least in Korea, the British OR Australian accent is much easier for students to pronounce.

yes but no because America is a melting pot all the accents combined into one. Alot of people usually portray us as deep southerners. Even though not that many Americans talk like that its the most famous. Every accent you have ever done can be considered american.

Go to Nebraska for the standard American accent. But we have plenty of regional accents to go around.

yes there is an american accent, more than one, tons of them. it's mainly from Webster and standardizing American English to get away from the British system. I can't really explain it concisely, other than it would stand out if you could recognize it.
