There is nothing wrong with people that drink it's just that the people that do drink need to know their limit. You can have a drink every once and a while and nt be considered an alcoholic. The thing is you can't let your life to run by the urge to be/ get drunk. People drink for different reason and as long as you are being safe when you are drinking then it's fine. I didn't start drinking anything until I was 22 years old and I'm glad that I decided to wait until I was ready to experiment with drinking and how it would effect my body. Start out slow only tasting things that are prepared by someone that you trust like at a bar. Don't ever go around tasting drinks that you don;t know what's in it or who made it because there are some really cruel people in this world and I would hate for an innocent person to get a date rape drug or some other substance in their drink. Be careful out there and no DRUNK DRIVING.

Most people believe that if they come from a family that have one or more members that are known to be alcoholics, the chances are that the person would also follow the same. This is not true. Everyone basically gave you the same advice 'NO' because it sounds like you also setting yourself to travel down the same road.
You have to make some very personal decision about your future. You've seen and experience the ugly side of what alcohol can do to a person's mind, and you have made a personal promise not to allow this substance to possess you. As we always say, 'learn from other people mistakes'.
You're not hippocite, but very curious, and at the same time very alarm which is good and I am proud you are. If you ask me what would I do if I where you? I will tell you that I'd fear of becoming an alcoholic, because I am around it so offen,
and I am not willing to torture my life by getting into fights and being arrested. Most of all I would truly fear of Drinking and Driving because the outcome of that can be deadly to you and to others.
On your wonderful 21st birthday, go out to dinner with your close friends and family and have a good safe birthday. Give thanks to the Lord that you'll have many many many more.
Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God Bless

Alchoholism runs in families. Not just by behaviour but through genetics. Some people can drink sensibly, and some can't. As a recovering alchoholic, I can tell you honestly, it can ruin your life and that of anyone you care about. If I could turn back the clock I would have never had that first drink.
Have a really expensive non-alcoholic cocktail on your birthday, and make a toast to your future with a clear head, and know that as a non-drinker your life is going to be so much better than that of an alcoholic.
Happy birthday.

No...just because alcoholism runs in your family, does not mean it runs in you. That would be like automatically assuming (for example) that just because most everyone in your family has Diebetes that you do or will diagnosed with it as well. If you understand the consequences of alcoholism, and know that it is not right, then sipping on a drink with a few friends, once in a while is fine. You just have to know your limits, so have fun and enjoy your birthday! Remember: don't drink and drive!!! Hope this makes you feel better and more secure about this!

no drinking a margarita will not make you a hypocrite, if you get drunk like they do and cause fights or if you drink on a regular basis. Just don't have your b-day around them, drink some where else. I gave up drinking because of the same thing happened in my family, but I am the only one in my family that doesn't drink...my grandpa just passed away because of it, so I know where your coming from. Just don't drink alot, and you will be fine.

A margarita on your 21st is fine. Keep it to one, tho. Don't let yourself get smashed. You've already seen what can happen then.
I also stayed away from drinking because most of my family was alcoholic. I never regretted doing that. I had my kids, and I worked very hard at trying to raise them right. I've been a responsible, happy adult for a long time now, and this is good.

Alcoholism is a combination of genetics and environmental stress that brings it out. In my experience, if one person in your family is alcoholic than there's a high chance you are too. So it's your call. If you drink and it's fine, great. If you're an alcoholic and you stop, that's fine too. However if there's a problem YOU have to be the one to make that decision. All the interventions, rehabs, screaming, etc. don't matter. Also there will be people who will hassle you about not drinking and won't back down. So this means you may have to change who you hang out with. If necessary, are you ready to do that? Sometimes you have to cut yourself off from family. And sometimes they'll cut you off as well. Trust your intuition and go with that.

I come from a long line of addicts myself. Pick one alcoholics and narcotics. I myself have a food addiction. I gone to different organizations to cope With my problem and understand My families as well. I can tell you honestly, In the case with you, you are at a higher probability to becoming an alcoholic than most. I would advise not drinking. There are other ways to celebrate without getting intoxicated. You are young with a wonderful life ahead by your positive choices and by asking this question, also very bright. You are wise to ask questions, keep on asking. That's how you'll grow. Happy Birthday Sweetie!!

I dont think having 1 margarita will get you drunk, but its good that you see your families mistakes. Just remember, even if you cant taste the alcohol, it there, just covered with sweeteners. So its easy to have too many. You wont be a hypocrite by having just 1 drink, its ok

First of all, good for you for deciding not to drink thus far. I've promised myself the same thing because I've seen what alcohol does to people.
Having one drink doesn't make you an alcoholic. I would say go for it if you are just curious to know what its like. Just don't go overboard and know your limitations. Don't become addicted.
Happy Birthday, whenever it is!
