It sounds like he has an ear infection. The most common in dogs ears are either a bacterial infection, or yeast infection. sometimes both. Obviously you can't see it with the naked eye and they scratch alot. Another possibilty may be earmites. Though they are most common in cats, dogs can get them too. If you look in its ear and see alot of brown/ like caramel color it may yeast, also take a swab if it and smell it. If you know what yeast bread smells like it smells similar. If you see alot of crusty black stuff those are more likely earmites. If you have it on flea meds earmites shouldn't be the problem though, or if it gets groomed often. You should take it to the Vet and they'll get a sample of the gunky stuff from each ear and they'll do a cytology, where they apply it to a microscope slide and stain it to search for yeast or bacteria. If the find either one or both they should send you meds for it or ointments to massage into the ear to get rid of the infection. They also will probably send some ear cleaner to use everyday for two weeks and apply the meds each time after cleaning. It all depends what type of treatment for these infections your veterianarian likes to use. They all have preferances and there are many different ways to treat these types of infection. The one I mentioned is the most common. It also shouldn't be too expensive depending where you go. Where I work a tube of ointment is 10 dollars and the cleaner is 8 dollars, office visit 15-25 dollars. So not too expensive. For earmites they can usually tell by just looking because it's black crusty stuff and not oily. They will also get a sample and just look under the microscope to find any crawling earmites.

MD is on the right track. If left untreated your dog can go deaf. Temporary relief comes for a hydrogen peroxide swab and cleaning out the ear wax. A second cause can be ear mites, very prevelant in poodles. You vet can give you meds to take care of this problem as well.

Take him to the vet and let the dr. look inside to get a true diagnosis. It may very well be a yeast infection in the ear canal (my pug gets those frequently). The dr. can take a swab sample of the inner ear and check for yeast and if it is, they will prescribe ear drops. Be sure to follow the directions on the prescription, if you stop using the drops before you are supposed to, even if the dog seems better, you won't get rid of all the yeast and it will come right back.
Good luck!

Poodles and Malteses (etc) grow excess hair in their ears that you need to twease out. If you don't that can lead to an ear infection. The only thing to make it go away is to go the vet and get medication. They can talk to you about ear maintenance and stuff too.

Could be earmites.
You need to look at his ear, if it is red on the inside areas then he has something irritating him.
If it smells really bad then it might be an infection.
The vet will smell to check on condition of ears. And check to see if it is irritated on the inside.
Your local pet store should have ear care products to help with your pets ears. (clearner and earmite treatment)
Another thing I do to my boys ears is I cut all the hair on the inside to help keep it clear and clean

An ear infection is something that is not going to go away on it's own. An ear infection is very painful and if it goes untreated, it can cause permanent damage. Take him to the vet.
