Monzon by unanimous decision and fairly easily. Toney would use that defense of his where he would block punches with his shoulders, look to counter off the ropes. That would be his undoing. Monzon would control the fight with that 77 inch reach of his and sting Toney with right crosses and hooks to the body. Toney would avoid enough of Monzon's punches to keep from being knocked out. But I feel this fight would not really be competitive at all. Monzon's height, reach and heavy hands would neutralize any advantage Toney would have in the hand speed department.

I cannot believe that some people actually think that Toney can defeat Monzon, especially since it is staged in middleweight! Monzon had much more power, speed, and had better conditioning. Toney has more chin, defense, and stamina(since many of his fights went the distance).
I can say that this fight will not go the distance. Monzon would take the feel-out early rounds. The middle rounds would also go to Monzon. I can see Toney making a small rally in the championship rounds. It won't be enough, though. I see Toney surviving but losing by way of unanimous decision.

% may be the distinction the following, absolute self belief. i don't think of Monzon could manage to press Toney with a lot success as Toney became an particularly massive middleweight with terrfic protection and a global-classification chin. i imagine Toney keeps this contained in the technique the hoop and ultimately only receives the timing and determination down, and works Monzon over with more suitable hand % and counterpunching. Monzon is an all-time large, yet i imagine ultimately Toney will be appropriately positioned as an particularly unique expertise - at 100 and sixty Toney dominates 3/4 of the wrestle and takes a UD.

The blogbaba's first big fight in Vegas was Toney vs Jones, and I have had a soft spot for James since my buddy's father chased him around Jackie's gym with a curling bar for bullying his son. James and the blogbaba are both Michiganites so this one hits as close to home as a Hearns question.
Monzon is one of the all time great middle weights, and James in not. Then again Monzon never won a Heavyweight title, and James has. At Middle weight James had trouble making weight and would not have been at his strongest. Still James was strong enough at middle weight to KO Michael Nunn so the power was there. Monzon on the other hand was more at ease with the weight and in this one regard, the scales tip towards Monzon. From a pure boxing skill standpoint in the classical sense, again Monzon slightly edges Toney.
Purely from a physical standpoint, Toney would appear to have a power edge, but Toney's greatest asset was/is his ability to slip punches and provide an awkward target to his opponets. This skill made Toney a deadly counter puncher and the hall of fame fighter he is. The question of whether Toney qualifies as a "great middleweight" in no way alters the fact that James is a "great boxer". His place in boxing history is as safe as Monzon's.
In the end the deciding factor is that Monzon always got the recognition and respect of boxing and Toney had to claw and scratch for the respect he took. After the Holyfield fight all James had to do was acknowlege Evander's career and thank Holylfield for the chance to fight him and all would have been forgiven in the boxing world, James's stock would have soared. We got James as he is, not as the market would have liked, James's attitude would have eventually given him the necessary edge to catch Monzon.
Toney by KO in 10.

Both good chins. Toney might have a slight edge in power but it won't matter. Monzon would be the busier fighter in every round. If Toney stays in the fight Monzon would win the later rounds taking the decision.
