Well the only thing I've done is have a heart to heart talk to my daughter about birth control. My resolution would never work because some parents can't stand the thought of talking to their kids about it, but if girls felt they could I think there would be a lot less pregnancys

First of all, abortion is never necessary...NEVER.
As far as what we can do to lower the number of abortions per year, I feel that we should begin with our youth. We should be teaching abstinence to our teens rather than giving out birth control that is unreliable.
What have I done to change things? I admit that I have not done much outside my home, but I am teaching my children about abstinence, and about respecting their bodies because they are a temple of the Holy Spirit. Also, I pray for an end to abortion and for those considering abortion, and pray is a powerful thing. I am joining a new group in my church community that is pro-life and will be fighting for the rights of the unborn.
God bless,
Stanbo

Well, I am pro-life, yet I don't condemn those who choose abortion simply because they often are having to deal with a whole array of emotions about the whole thing themselves, and it really is not my place to judge. What I try to do is to tell how I feel when an opportunity presents itself, without engaging in debate simply for the reason you mentioned: not everybody feels that abortion is murder, as I do.
I think that one of the things that would reduce abortion would be to fully educate someone about an abortion before it is performed, so that they can go into it with full knowledge. I don't mean necessarily that they should be told the finest details about how the abortion will be performed, but they should at least be given a general idea, as well as to be told whether or not the child feels anything. I also believe that a sonogram should be offered to every woman/girl about to undergo an abortion and perhaps made mandatory in abortions performed after 2 months when the baby is already well-formed. THEN after a person is able to see their baby, they will have a much more informed idea of what they are about to do.
Too many times, abortion is presented as a form of birth control, the body being affected is being portrayed to be the mother's body only, and the child being killed as being simply a "fetus" or "piece of fleshy tissue". If the simple truth could be told about what abortion entails without going into the gory details, and if a person could receive a sonogram as part of the included cost of the abortion, I think that would make a huge difference and many women/girls would opt for adoption or keeping their child instead.
Of course teaching our kids, both at home and at school that abortion is NOT birth control, but is actually a means to end a pregnancy and that it involves stopping the life of a growing and developing human being, but to teach this without passing judgment, would also likely reduce the abortion rates.
Finally, I almost died during my pregnancy with my first child. I had the worst case of morning sickness one could imagine. Many women have experienced this same condition during pregnancy. It's called severe hyperemesis. It basically means that the mother's vomiting is out of control and she is dependent upon IV fluids to keep her and the baby healthy. I threw up every 10-15 minutes 24 hours a day for 2-1/2 months straight. No lie. I suffered tremendously. My doctor ordered a sonogram for me during my first hospital stay. I was only 4-1/2 weeks pregnant. This is about the time that most women discover they are pregnant. I had known I was pregnant within a week of conception due to sudden and severe vomiting. Anyway, the sonogram showed my baby's heart beating. It showed up as a little blinking light on the sonogram. There was no mistaking that I was carrying a living human being with a heart beating independently of my own. 4-1/2 weeks is usually when a baby is considered "fleshy tissue" or a developing "fetus". It is around the time however that the heart first starts to beat. When I tell people about my experience with my own baby, and what I saw on the sonogram at so early during my pregnancy, it does alter their viewpoints somewhat because many people just don't stop to consider that since the baby is so small that the mother isn't even showing yet.
I almost died during that first pregnancy. My pro-life doctor told me she would have to abort my child to save my life if I didn't improve soon. My baby is now my 17 year old son, and I thank God for him every day!

Well, I'm libertarian. In the end I do believe that it is up to the individual and her conscience whether or not to get an abortion.
Despite that I think that sex-ed is the answer to the abortion problem. Abstinence is the only fool-proof way to completely avoid pregnancy, but abstinence-only education just doesn't work. I think young people need to know their options. I think that a lot of abortions are done because people feel trapped in a situation that they feel unable to handle (as the poster who stated she was not stable enough to adopt kids I'm only slightly terrified about getting pregnant myself.) Young people will have sex, by making them aware of the methods they have to prevent pregnancy or disease, I think we would see a drop in both (What's the percentage of young women who don't know that you can get an STD with oral sex? Frighteningly high). Just look at all the myths for how to avoid pregnancy (Coca-cola is not birth control!).
How have I contributed to this? Well, charity starts at home they say. I've told my cousins that they can come to me with any questions about anything (ie: sex) and I will give them an honest answer and not tell their parents. We've had a few discussions. They both know (even at their tender ages) that if they are going to have sex, there had better be a condom used. (And yes, I've even offered to buy some for them if/when they want. No questions asked)
There's my $0.02

Education, education, education! I would rather have people make the choice to act responsibly than to legislate morality. Aids, herpes, Hepatitis B, unwanted pregnancies; unprotected premarital sex is never a good idea. Why aren't we driving that point home in schools, churches, doctor's offices, and clinics?
When my mother went in for heart surgery the doctor made us watch a film so we would know what to expect. Women should be required to watch films like, "The Silent Scream" prior to their abortion. They should refer to it as an abortion, not a "procedure". Abortion is very rarely necessary. Of my friends who have had abortions, all have done it as a form of birth control.
I am helping to raise a 2 year old child; an agreement that I made to keep him from being aborted. Every day I look at this precious child and thank God that he was spared. So do his parents, who are now ashamed that they even considered abortion. What a loss we would have all suffered!
Thank you for asking the question. Please note that I kept my religious beliefs to myself (not even one Bible quote), and tried to answer from a secular point of view. I hope that you get more cheer than hate.

Okay, for the record, this is just talk. What if abortion was only legal if it was needed for a medical reason. Say for instance, the mothers life was in danger by continuing the pregnancy, or the baby was so malformed or mentally disabled that it's quality of life would be severely limited. If people would stop using abortion as an easy way out of a difficult situation, it might not be so bad.

I think the real issues underlying the abortion debate are the appropriateness of sexual relationships and the level of responsibility individuals exercise when engaging in sexual relationships. We wouldn't debate abortion to the extent we do if most (understandably not all) of the individuals who have had abortions had been responsible to have protected sex. I think society has a schizophrenic view of sex that makes it difficult for younger people especially to take ownership of their sexuality and make responsible choices. We want to keep younger people from having sex, but discourage openness about their very human feelings, which seems to have resulted in unwanted pregnancies that must be "resolved." Just my off the cuff thought...I am not trying to excuse it, but we are all in this together. Ask any woman who has had an abortion and she will likely say that she would have preferred to have taken precautions than endure the abortion.

It should be illegal....not just becuase it is murder....but because it is unfair to men. Only women have a choice in becoming a parent....she can just abort and move on, while a man has no say..he would be stuck paying 4 it 4 18 years. Abortion is the same as being a deadbeat father if its just about it being her body and being pregnant...then I dont want to hear all the pro-choice retotric...like she cant afford it or it will ruin her future/. Everyone (men and women) should take responibly if they create a life,

if you are one of the sheep that believe in immaculate conception you will never need a condom
while catholics had choir boys castrated ( the castrati ) to retain their " angelic " voices for the papal choir until 1938.
if the sick, hipocritical churches and the likes of g dumbya would evolve
birth control and the day after pill ( ru-486), [opposed by x-tians]
would be readily available and no abortions would be necessary.
but they will try to hit you in the face with some condescending quotes from a bible that was translated by a bunch of patriachal misogynist priests who considered women little more than chattel....check your apppalling history x-tians and repent that you were so stupid as to follow such an unkind and mean course.
not to mention stem cell research that could cure all sorts of horrible illnesses.
and what is with the catholic church and all the child molestations ?
if you really want to make a change
vote anything but republican
they would just like any radical muslim destroy free thinking, free speech and democracy

I'm sorry if I was hateful. It's a subject I feel very strongly about.
The problem with 'it is not my right to put my beliefs on them.' is that it is not consistent.By the same line, you could say 'Slavery is wrong, but not everyone feels that way,so it's not my right to put my beliefs on them'.The point is,abortion is wrong. It's murder. And if you truly are pro-life,you would not be justifying abortion.
To try and prevent abortion,I want kids across the country to actually know what it is.Tell them the truth, not a sanitized version.Tell them how they do abortions.Tell them about fetal pain and fetal development.Tell them that if they do not want a baby, they should not have sex.
And I want abortion illegal.
