I'm planning on using onions and garlic, but what else would make the beans real tasty? I will probably mash them up so they're more like refried beans consistency.

use your onions and garlic...good choice...add some bacon drippings..that way when you mash them...the will keep thier consistancy...you can use ham...bacon...ham hocks...any pork helps the flavor...you can always remove the meat after it has flavored...good luck...

I always add butter to mine...and ham or bacon. You could remove the meat before mashing the beans.

Salt pork, smell your seasonings, if it smells like it would be good with beans, dump it in..that is what I do and they always come out good! Try chorizo when you mash them, cooking it again of course, chorizo is pork.

I like Bay Seasoning, or Seasoned Salt mixed with paprika...experiment and see what works for you.
