we have a mexican girl 23 years old that has been working for us for the past year. she speaks no english at all. she works 11 hours a day and is the only mexican there along with my mom and cousin. i try to converse with her to keep her from being bored but conversation is somewhat difficult. i know some spanish because i took 3 years in high school. we had some decent conversations before and i try to talk to her everyday. she only speaks when i talk to her and never talks to me. she is not a shy person. when i stand next to her it feels awkard like she is trying to avoid eye contact with me and she looks uncomfortable when im close. should i just stop trying to speak to her.

She may not be talking to you because she feels it is inappropriate to talk while she is supposed to be working or she does not want to talk to you for some other reason (it is possible she does not like you). There are three things you should try.
1. Learn how to ask her in Spanish "Would you prefer that I did not talk to you while you are here?"
2. Stop communicating with her for a while to see if she then reaches out to you instead, that way she will see that you have picked up on her "negative or stand offish" sign language.
3. Say to yourself "to hell with it" I will just keep talking to her no matter what she thinks (at least i am brushing up on my Spanish) or if you feel uncomfortable still, just stop talking to her.

Have a female her age ask her what she thinks of you. If she likes you, she may be feeling nervous. Even though she is not shy all the time, a person sometimes acts shy around someone they like. She might be a little afraid of being taken advantage of, too. Maybe that is something that has happened in the past, in our country where she can't do a lot about it. She may well be interested, shy, and a little afraid.

She doesn't like you. So you're wasting your time talking.
