By the sounds of your postings it seems you know the difference between 2WD and 4WD and 4HI and 4LOW. That being said I'll assume you have the transfercase lever set to either 2HI or 4HI when the light comes on.

The light is attached to a physical switch located in your center console near the 4WD lever. Either the switch has loosened up and is touching the lever setting off the light, or it's shorting out. In theory it should be a cheap and easy fix, please don't get taken to the cleaners.

If you're not sure if your in 4LOW, try making a sharp 90 degree turn on dry pavement. In 2HI or 4HI there should be little or no problem. In 4HI Part Time (if equipped), and 4LOW the front end of the truck is going to bounce around (this is normal by the way). Also in 4 low the engine will be roaring at 30MPH.

You must have put it into 4Low, or someone else that drives your vehicle put it into 4Low. Start the vehicle and put the transmission in neutral and shove the transfer case lever back into 2WD or 4WD full time depending on which transfer case you have. Either its actually in 4Low, or the sensor isn't functioning. In order to tell if its actually in 4Low drive the jeep and if the engine revs, shifts hard, and doesn't want to go very fast then its in 4Low. But first I would try shifting the transfer case around a bit, sometimes they will get bumped just right and get pulled into low range.

I believe so, their is a low 4wd and high 4wd, low is 35mph and under. perhaps you have a bad switch in the shift lever and it is not actually in 4wd.

For my Beetle, LOW means "low gear." I use it to get out of the driveway when it's snowy.
