The EIT registration is the preliminary certification toward obtaining permission to practice Engineering in that State as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.). There is a set of written tests of general engineering and science with some emphasis on the particular field of engineering to be practiced. It is usually taken soon after graduation from college and takes most of a day. In passing the test the applicant is assigned an EIT certificate and this is recorded with the State.
As Traci H has just pointed out (below), EIT means Engineer in Training.
The second testing is usually administered after five years of practical engineering practice has been accomplished and is related directly to the solution of typical problems to be encountered in that particular field of Engineering. There is also a screening interview. At one time a person might not have had to be a graduate from an accredited college of engineering to earn the license , but it sure helped.
Some states have reciprocal agreements in that a P.E. licensed (or an EIT certified) in one state is also recognized in the other upon application and payment of the licensing fees. There may now be a National registration as it has been discussed.
